APHN was organized in 1944 and now operates as a nonprofit organization in Natchitoches, Louisiana.  Its mission is to promote and preserve an understanding of the rich cultural heritage of Natchitoches and the Cane River area.  In consonance with that mission, its purpose is the long term preservation of areas of historic value, sites, cultural landscapes, artifacts, archives and cultures of the people.

The vision of the APHN is to apprise future generations of our unique cultural heritage and to inspire them to preserve it.  To that end, APHN  strives for excellence in interpretation and education that challenges our audience with ideas, relationships and concepts. At present, APHN operates two historic properties: Melrose on the Cane (Melrose Plantation) and the Lemee House. The organization also provides educational opportunities to children and adults through the Children's Walking Tour of Natchitoches and the Fall Tour of Historic Homes.

APHN will continue to promote and preserve the diverse cultures of Natchitoches and Cane River area.  Future generations will understand, support and celebrate the preservation, restoration and interpretation of our historic area.
